Bicycle Education Programs and Encouraging Young People to Ride
As the world continues to struggle with voracious energy demands, traffic congestion, and global warming, many communities are looking to promote bicycle use among young people as an alternative to cars.
December 10, 2010 /Transportation and Trucking PR News/ -- As the world continues to struggle with voracious energy demands, traffic congestion, and global warming, many communities are looking to promote bicycle use among young people as an alternative to cars. Whether it be the bike traffic schools in Santa Cruz, California or the expansion of community biking throughout the Czech Republic, people all over the world are looking for ways to encourage cycling. Prior to the launch of the Bike it program in North Wales in 2009, only 13 % of children were biking to school once a week. After the program was implemented, 39% of children now bike to school on a regular basis. This program shows how an entire community can come together to increase children's health, self-reliance, and self-esteem, while at the same time helping the environment. In North Wales the Bike it program included organized cycling training, bike maintenance sessions, the installation of new bike sheds, integration of cycling with local schools, and interaction with area police to make sure there were safe routes to schools. In the United States, where child obesity rates are a national epidemic, encouraging cycling over motorized transportation should be encouraged at every opportunity.
