Overturned Greyhound Bus is Most Recent Northeast Bus Crash, New York Auto Accident Seeks Answers
A St. Louis-bound Greyhound bus that overturned on the Pennsylvania Turnpike sent 14 people to the hospital.
NEW YORK, NY, August 28, 2011 /Transportation and Trucking PR News/ -- A Greyhound bus traveling from New York City to St. Louis overturned on the Pennsylvania Turnpike last week and sent fourteen passengers to hospitals.
Vexing to some New York auto accident lawyers, this bus accident was the latest in a growing series of bus accidents on roads in the Northeast.
This year, there have already been more bus crash related injuries and deaths than in all of 2010. Over 30 people have been killed and more than 300 injured in tour bus accidents this year, according to Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. Last year, 30 people were killed and 272 injured in 28 bus crashes.
"The recent increase in bus accidents is alarming," said New York auto accident lawyer David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, one of New York's auto accident law firms, "The increase is even more alarming given that more is being done more to reduce the number of bus accidents then has done in the past."
In this recent bus accident, the driver, Kareem Edward Farmer, 24, lost control of the bus while traveling in the passing lane. According to state police, the front end of the bus struck a concrete barrier and the left rear side rode up against the barrier. The bus then careened across the highway and traveled up an embankment before landing on its side.
Unlike most of the other 2011 bus crashes along the East Coast, this bus accident involved a commercial carrier, not a chartered tour bus or a smaller operator.
In March, New York began increased enforcement of bus regulations. This greater scrutiny of buses followed several fatal bus accidents including the March crash of a bus returning to New York City after an overnight trip to a casino in Connecticut. Fifteen people were killed in the bus accident.
New York auto accident lawyers at The Perecman Firm supported tightening of and increase in safety regulations.
New York requires bus safety inspections by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) every six months.
Less than a month ago, the NYSDOT suspended the operating licenses of eight poor performing charter tour bus operators. According to the New York governor's press office, "all of the companies had failed three or more roadside inspections of buses or drivers in the last six months of intensified state enforcement or failed their scheduled semi-annual bus inspections or received a Federal Out-of-Service order."
"Hopefully, the Department of Transportation's efforts will help to prevent any further bus accidents in New York from occurring," said New York auto accident lawyer Perecman said.
Farmer was reported to have a clean record.
State police and the federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration are still investigating the bus accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Most people who have been involved in a bus accident have legal options available to them. These options include bringing a claim against the motor coach company and others for injuries and other losses they have suffered. Some of the types of compensation that may be available in a bus injury claim include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.
